80s Toys We All Miss

Join us as we take a look back at some of the most popular toys from the 80s and see how many you can remember!

There are some things you just don’t forget, and as we see new toys coming out all the time in TV adverts and catalogues, you can’t help but sometimes reminisce over the toys you used to receive as a child. If you grew up in the 1980s, you were probably surrounded by a huge range popular kids’ toys, some of which were based on TV shows or vice versa. Here at Retro Sweet we thought we’d give you a little reminder about the toys that used to be around and see if you can remember them all!

1. Teddy Ruxpin

Remember Teddy Ruxpin? He was the magical storytelling bear, complete with moving eyes and mouth. He became the best-selling toy of the mid 80s, using an old-school audio tape cassette desk built into the bear’s back to tell its stories. Companions for Teddy Ruxpin were created and a cartoon was even created based on the characters.

2. He-Man & Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe, in particular its leader He-Man, fought against the evil Skeletor on the planet Eternia. He was well equipped with a sword, battle axe and a shield, ready to take on anything that came his way. This successful line of toys from Mattel was cool, exciting and He-Man became one of the leading action figures of the 80s!

3. Care Bears

If you were a child growing up in the 80s, you probably couldn’t escape these furry friends. The Care Bears began their journey as an idea for a greetings card! They were later turned into teddy bears, and they even appeared in TV specials throughout the 80s. Each bear had its own colour and badge to represent its personality, ready to play on rainbows and clouds. You’d need lots of Love Hearts to go around for these guys.

4. Rubik’s Cube

You couldn’t possibly talk about 80s toys without mentioning the exasperating yet always fun Rubik’s Cube. I bet trying to figure this one out kept you occupied for hours, and you’d deserve a huge hamper of sweets if you managed it. The Rubik’s Cube is considered as one of the best-selling toys of all time and it gained global recognition in the early 80s. It has even inspired world championships and record-breaking speeds to solve the ultimate brain-teaser.

5. Boglins

Boglins were the perfect toy for any little boy who fancied frightening their little sisters or friends. A hand puppet that expanded into a whole range of different Boglins, they became popular in a world that was awestruck by Gremlins. They were funny looking things, with two arms but no legs and some versions of them could even squirt water at you! We bet they wouldn’t share their sweetie jars with you.
